Why is the subject Environment & Ecology important for the UPSC Examination?

Rapid environmental degradation and extreme climate events have become the defining issues of this century, and it is not surprising that questions on these topics have become common in the UPSC Examination.

Environment and Ecology accounted for about 23% of the questions in the Preliminary Examination during 2011-25. In the Mains Examination during the same period, 9-10 questions have appeared every year on this subject.
